A tree does not have to fall to be a problem. Trees that show certain warning signs are already at elevated risk for limb failure or sudden uprooting, especially under the wind and rain load that comes with Florida storm season.
Brevard County homeowners should watch for these warning signs on their property. Dead or hanging branches in the upper canopy are among the most common precursors to a limb-drop event. Cracks in the main trunk or at major branch unions indicate structural failure over time. Fungal growth, mushrooms, or conks at the base of a tree signal internal decay that is often far more advanced than it appears. A sudden lean that has developed over weeks, rather than the gradual lean a tree may have grown with for years, is another red flag.
None of these signs mean a tree automatically needs to come down. Many hazard conditions are manageable with targeted pruning, cabling, or treatment. But they do mean a professional assessment is overdue.
