Fall is often one of the driest stretches of the year in Northeast Florida, and stressed pines attract a dangerous pest.
Ips engraver beetles target slash and loblolly pines weakened by drought, storm damage, lightning, or root disturbance. Look for small pitch tubes or reddish boring dust on the bark, and needles fading from green to yellow to rusty brown, often starting at the top of the crown. Stress from recent storms or nearby construction makes a pine even more vulnerable.
Infested pines can decline within weeks, and beetles may move to nearby trees that are already stressed. A dead pine near a home in Jacksonville Beach or Green Cove Springs also grows brittle and unpredictable over time. Removing an infested tree promptly helps protect the healthy pines around it.
Our family has cared for Northeast Florida pines for three generations. We assess affected trees, remove those that cannot be saved, and leave your yard cleaner than we found it.
