What a certified arborist actually checks during a tree health assessment

Post Copy

A lot of homeowners in Northern Virginia, D.C., and Maryland schedule a tree assessment because something looks off and they're not sure whether to be concerned. Here's what a certified arborist is actually looking at during that visit.

The assessment starts at the ground: soil condition around the base, signs of root damage or compaction, any fungal growth at the root flare, and whether the trunk flare is buried under mulch or soil, which can slowly suffocate a tree over years. Then it moves up the trunk: checking for cracks, cavities, unusual bark patterns, or signs of insect activity like small bore holes or sawdust-like frass.

The canopy gets evaluated for dieback, asymmetry that suggests structural problems, dead wood placement, and any branches with narrow, tight angles that are prone to splitting under load. Leaf color and density across different parts of the canopy can tell you a lot about what's happening below the soil line.

Dos Amigos Tree Experts is led by a certified arborist who brings this kind of systematic evaluation to every property we visit across Alexandria, Northern Virginia, D.C., and Maryland. If you've been wondering about a tree on your property, a free assessment is a good starting point. Call (703) 300-6103 or visit dosamigostree.com.
