Northern Virginia summers are hard on trees. Extended heat, stretches without meaningful rain, and high humidity create conditions where even established trees can show signs of stress, and homeowners often mistake early symptoms for something less serious than they are.
Heat stress in trees typically shows up as wilting or curling leaves, early leaf drop in midsummer, scorched leaf margins, or a general thinning of the canopy in areas that looked full just weeks earlier. Newly planted trees are most vulnerable, but older trees on compacted soil or in areas with reduced moisture access can also struggle significantly during hot, dry stretches.
The tricky part is that summer stress can weaken a tree's defenses against secondary problems, including insect infestations and fungal disease, that take hold over the following months. Addressing stress early is almost always better than waiting until visible damage is extensive.
