How to Tell a Tree That Has Always Leaned From One That Has Started to Move

Post Copy

Many leaning trees are stable, but a lean that has started recently is a sign worth having an arborist assess before winter.

Trees that grew toward the light often lean for decades without trouble, and their trunks usually curve back upward near the top. A newly developing lean tends to run straight from the base, and the warning signs are at ground level: cracked or raised soil on the side opposite the lean, exposed roots, or a gap between the trunk and the soil.

Saturated fall soil and the weight of winter snow and ice put the most stress on a root plate that is already shifting, which makes autumn the right time to check.

Crass Tree Experts provides tree inspections across Towson, Timonium, Parkton, New Freedom, and Stewartstown, combining three generations of hands-on experience with careful, honest assessment of whether a leaning tree is stable or needs attention.
