A Pre-Winter Tree Inspection Looks for What Ice and Heavy Snow Will Find First

Post Copy

Winter storms in Baltimore County and York County don't always bring big wind. Often it's a quiet inch of freezing rain or a wet, heavy snow that does the damage, adding hundreds of pounds to a limb that was already weak. A tree inspection in the fall is the best way to find those limbs while there's still time to do something about them.

Here's what we look at during a pre-winter inspection. Dead or hanging branches that will fail first under load. Narrow V-shaped unions and cracks where two stems meet. Long, heavy limbs extending over the roof, driveway, or power drop. Signs of decay like cavities, fungal growth, or loose bark. And the overall lean and root condition of trees close to the house.

Not every finding means removal. Many issues can be handled with targeted pruning, cabling, or simply keeping an eye on a limb through the season. The point is to make those decisions calmly now, instead of on a cold morning with a branch across the driveway.

Is there a tree on your property that always makes you a little nervous when an ice storm is in the forecast?
