If your live oaks need pruning, the next few months are the safest window of the year.
Oak wilt is a serious fungal disease in Texas, and it spreads when sap-feeding beetles are drawn to fresh pruning wounds. Those beetles are most active from late winter through early summer, which is why Texas foresters advise against pruning oaks from February through June.
Pruning now, while temperatures are cooler, lowers that risk considerably. Fresh oak cuts should still be sealed with a wound dressing right away, which is standard practice for our crews. Clean tools between trees matter too, and our crews follow that routine on every oak job.
Clearing roof lines, lifting low limbs over driveways, and removing deadwood are all good to take care of this fall. Your oaks, and your neighbors' oaks across Brazoria County, will be better for it. It also leaves them in better shape before spring storms roll in off the Gulf.
