Oak wilt has been moving through Texas for years, and Brazoria County's live oaks, red oaks, and water oaks are all susceptible. It's one of the most serious tree diseases in the state, and the warm, humid conditions of the Gulf Coast can accelerate its spread during active growing seasons.
The earliest visible sign is usually discoloration that starts at the leaf margins and works inward, often in late spring through early summer. Affected branches may drop leaves while they still appear to have some green in them. One of oak wilt's most concerning characteristics is its ability to spread underground through connected root systems, meaning nearby oaks can become infected before you notice anything is wrong.
Early action matters. Management options, including removing affected trees, severing root connections between infected and healthy trees, and injecting fungicide treatments in some situations, are more effective when the problem is caught early. Waiting until visible decline is widespread narrows your options significantly.
