When a large tree comes down in Houston, the stump is only part of what is left behind. Live oaks, water oaks, and pecans often spread thick surface roots several feet out from the trunk, and in our clay soils those roots sit right at the top of the lawn. Grinding just the stump leaves ridges that catch mower blades, trip people up, and make it hard to level the yard.
Our stump grinding service follows the major surface roots out from the stump and grinds them below grade along with it. Before we start, we ask about irrigation lines and sprinkler heads, since they are often run close to trees, and we work carefully around them. The grindings are used to fill the hole, or hauled away if you are planning a new bed or sod.
It is a small step that makes the difference between a yard that still feels like a tree was there and one that is ready for whatever comes next. What would you put in the spot where your old tree used to stand?
