Not every tree with a structural weakness needs to come down. A tree with a split trunk, a heavy leaning limb, or co-dominant stems can often be supported with cabling and bracing rather than removed outright.
Cables and braces are installed high in the canopy to redistribute the load and reduce the chance of a limb or trunk failing in a storm. It's a common option for large, mature shade trees where the tree's value to the property is worth preserving.
It's not the right fix for every tree. A certified arborist has to look at the whole structure, the species, and the tree's overall health before recommending it. But when it fits, it can add years, sometimes decades, to a tree that would otherwise be a removal.
Do you have an older shade tree on your property with a lean or split you've been keeping an eye on? It might be a better candidate for support than removal.
