Weeks of extreme heat with barely a break do real damage to Houston's trees, and it shows up differently by species. Live oaks drop leaves early to conserve water, while pines can develop a dull, yellowish cast as they struggle to keep up.
Houston's clay-heavy soil makes it worse, holding water near the surface but keeping it from reaching deeper roots. A tree can look fine after a quick rain and still be running on empty days later.
Our certified arborists are seeing more of this stress response across Houston, Klein, and Spring than usual for this point in summer.
Mature trees can still hit a breaking point during an unusually long dry stretch.
