A proper mulch layer across a tree's root zone can make a real difference in how well it handles peak Houston summer heat, keeping soil temperatures down and moisture in place longer between rain or watering.
The most common mistake we see on Greater Houston properties is mulch piled directly against the trunk in what is sometimes called a mulch volcano. That setup traps moisture against the bark and invites rot and pests rather than preventing them.
The right approach is a wide, flat ring of mulch about three inches deep that stops several inches short of the trunk and extends out toward the edge of the canopy, where the tree's active feeder roots are concentrated.
Champions Tree Preservation's certified arborists can evaluate root zone health and recommend the right mulching approach for your specific trees and soil conditions.
