Mulching for Summer: Protect Your Trees Through the Heat

Post Copy

Houston summers are intense. A 2-3 inch layer of quality mulch around the base of your trees can make the difference between trees that thrive and trees that struggle through July and August heat.

Mulch retains moisture, keeps soil temps stable, suppresses weeds that compete for water, and gradually breaks down to enrich the soil. The result: healthier trees that don't need hand-watering during our driest months.

Pro tip: keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk. We see too many trees smothered by mulch piled against the bark, which creates fungal problems. Let the tree breathe.

Have you mulched your landscape yet this spring, or is that something on your to-do list?
