Oaks are among the most common and beloved trees across East-Central Alabama, from Tallassee to Auburn to Wetumpka. They're also increasingly vulnerable to oak wilt, a fungal disease that can kill an affected tree in a single growing season and spread to neighboring oaks through connected root systems.
Oak wilt in Alabama typically shows up as rapid leaf discoloration, starting at the tips and margins and moving inward. You might see leaves wilting and dropping in late spring or early summer when a healthy tree should be fully leafed out. White or red oaks both suffer, though red oaks tend to decline faster.
The spread pattern is what makes oak wilt particularly serious: infected trees can pass the fungus underground to nearby oaks before showing visible symptoms. Early diagnosis and professional management, including targeted removal of infected trees and root barriers in some cases, can limit how far it spreads on your property.
If you've noticed unusual die-off in your oaks this season, Ceppo Cane can assess the situation and advise on next steps. Call (334) 467-0083 for a free estimate. We've served Tallassee and surrounding communities for over 25 years.
