Why Over-Pruning Palms Into a Hurricane Cut Weakens Them

Post Copy

Stripping a palm down to a few upright fronds may look tidy, but it takes away the very fronds the tree needs to stay healthy.

Palms feed themselves through their green fronds and draw nutrients like potassium from older ones as they age. Removing healthy green fronds, a practice nicknamed the hurricane cut, slows growth, can cause a narrowing of the trunk known as pencil pointing, and leaves the palm more stressed, not more storm ready.

Proper palm pruning removes dead and fully brown fronds, seed pods, and flower stalks, while leaving the green canopy intact. A good guideline is to keep fronds that sit above the horizontal line of the crown.

Canopy Crafters prunes palms across Lutz, Carrollwood, and Northdale with climbing methods that avoid spikes, protecting the trunk from wounds that invite disease.
