Seasonal: summer heat stress on Long Island oaks and maples, what to watch for right now

Post Copy

Summer heat on Long Island puts measurable stress on mature oaks, maples, and other large canopy trees, particularly those in compacted soil, in areas with impervious surfaces nearby, or with root systems that were saturated after a wet spring. Heat stress doesn't always look dramatic at first, but it accelerates the decline of trees that were already carrying structural problems going into the summer.

Signs of heat stress in Nassau and Suffolk County trees include wilting or curling leaves in the middle of the summer before fall color typically develops, premature leaf drop, scorched leaf edges without a disease pattern, and reduced new growth compared to previous years. A tree showing more than one of these signs is worth a professional look before the fall.

Burke and Son Tree Service evaluates trees across Bellmore, Massapequa, Wantagh, Merrick, Seaford, and surrounding Nassau and Suffolk communities. If you've got a tree that doesn't look right this summer, call 516-636-5383 to Get A Free Estimate.

Image / Media Suggestion

A close-up photo of heat-stressed leaves showing curl or edge scorch on a Long Island tree is ideal for this educational post. A wider shot of a large oak or maple in a Nassau County yard also works as contextual imagery. Authentic Long Island job or property photos are strongly preferred over stock images.
