Composite vs. Wood Decking: What Actually Holds Up Through a North Georgia Summer

Post Copy

Wood decking has a real appeal, the natural grain, the lower upfront cost, the classic look homeowners picture when they think "deck." But Georgia's combination of heat, humidity, and heavy summer rain is genuinely hard on wood, warping, graying, and splintering faster than most homeowners expect, especially without diligent yearly maintenance.

Composite decking costs more upfront but skips the sanding, staining, and sealing cycle entirely. It resists moisture swelling and UV fading far better in this climate, which matters more here than in drier parts of the country. The trade-off is a different look and feel underfoot, something worth standing on in person before deciding.

Neither material is wrong. It comes down to how much upkeep a homeowner actually wants to do every year versus a higher cost once.

Would you rather spend more upfront or spend a weekend every summer maintaining a deck?
