Fall is when a little attention pays off for your trees all year. Our blog post on the fall to-do list your trees wish you would make is a good one to revisit as the leaves start coming down across metro Atlanta.
Start with cleanup: rake leaves away from the root zone and clear out old, matted mulch, because decaying organic matter can harbor pests and fungal disease. Then look up, since dead and broken limbs are best removed by a trained arborist before winter weather does it for you. Water less often than in summer, aim at the root zone, and fertilize only established trees, as directed.
Finish with fresh mulch, two to four inches deep in a doughnut shape that never touches the trunk. Mulch piled against the bark holds moisture where it doesn't belong and invites decay and pests. The full checklist is linked in the comments.
