Digging around a tree's root zone to figure out what's wrong usually causes more damage than it solves, which is why air spading has become one of our go-to diagnostic tools. Compressed air breaks up soil without cutting or crushing roots, so we can actually see what's going on underneath.
It's how we find girdling roots, buried root flares, compacted soil, and construction damage that would otherwise stay hidden until symptoms show up in the canopy, often years later. The exposed roots can be corrected or treated on the spot in many cases.
For a mature tree showing decline with no obvious explanation above ground, air spading is often how we find the real answer. It's a more careful approach than the old dig-and-guess method most people picture.
