Most homeowners walk right past a thin vertical seam near the base of a tree trunk without a second thought. It looks like bark texture, not a warning sign, but it can be one of the clearer external clues that decay is developing inside the trunk.
These seams, sometimes called frost cracks or bark inclusions depending on the cause, form when internal stress or existing decay pushes outward against the bark. The crack itself isn't always the danger, it's what it's telling you about what's happening underneath.
An arborist can use a resistance drill or sounding mallet to check what's actually going on inside without cutting the tree open, and that assessment is the difference between catching a problem early and finding out the hard way during a storm.
