Sunscald Cracking Is Appearing on Thin-Barked Trees Across Metro Atlanta

Post Copy

Vertical cracks or sunken bark on the south or west side of a trunk this time of year usually point to sunscald rather than storm damage.

Thin-barked species like maples and honey locusts are most vulnerable, especially when a nearby tree was recently removed and left a trunk suddenly exposed to direct summer sun. Once bark cracks, insects and decay organisms have an easy path into the wood.

Our ISA Certified Arborists check for early sunscald signs during routine visits across Atlanta, Sandy Springs, Roswell, Brookhaven, and Norcross, and can recommend trunk protection before a small crack turns into a larger structural issue.

Early attention almost always means a healthy scar instead of a spreading wound.
