Atlanta's Urban Heat Island Effect and What It Means for Tree Health in Metro Neighborhoods

Post Copy

Atlanta's urban heat island effect raises ground temperatures in dense neighborhoods significantly above surrounding areas, and that sustained heat adds up for trees throughout the metro. In Buckhead, Decatur, Norcross, and across metro Atlanta, trees in compacted urban soils are already working under root zone constraints. Elevated summer temperatures make everything harder.

Heat stress in urban trees shows up as leaf scorch, premature yellowing, wilting that doesn't recover overnight, and bark damage on sun-exposed trunk surfaces. June and July are when these symptoms become visible. What looks like heat stress can also indicate pest pressure, fungal activity, or root problems that have been developing for longer, which is why a professional assessment is more useful than waiting to see how the season plays out.

If you're seeing changes in the trees on your property this early in summer, contact Boutte Tree for an evaluation from our team of ISA Certified Arborists serving metro Atlanta.
