Fungal Conks on Treasure Valley Trees Can Point to Internal Decay

Post Copy

Mushrooms or shelf-shaped conks growing on a tree's trunk, root flare, or major roots often point to internal wood decay that has been developing for years.

These growths are the fruiting bodies of wood-decay fungi. Depending on the species, the decay may be in the roots that anchor the tree or in the lower trunk, where strength matters most, and a tree can keep a full, green canopy while its structure weakens. Fall moisture makes these fungi easiest to spot in Treasure Valley yards. Other signs worth noting include cracks, cavities, and soft or crumbling wood at the base.

A conk does not always mean removal. ArborSafe's ISA Certified Arborists identify the fungus and assess how much sound wood remains, and some trees can be monitored safely for years. Serving Nampa, Caldwell, Meridian, Eagle, Boise, and the surrounding area. #TreeHealth #Arborist #TreasureValley #NampaIdaho
