Summer is here and Treasure Valley soil moisture is dropping fast. Proper mulching is one of the most effective ways to protect your trees through the dry months ahead — and it's something most homeowners can do this weekend with a small investment and the right technique.
Apply 3 to 4 inches of organic wood chip mulch in a ring extending out to the drip line of the tree, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk. Mulch piled against the bark traps moisture and creates conditions for rot. Wood chip mulch is the right material — it breaks down and improves the soil. Rock and rubber mulches hold heat and provide no soil benefit.
ArborSafe provides tree health consultations across Nampa, Caldwell, Meridian, Eagle, Boise, and the Treasure Valley. If you're not sure whether your trees are properly protected heading into summer, an arborist assessment gives you a clear picture and a specific plan.
