Mulching for moisture retention in the Treasure Valley's semi-arid climate

Post Copy

In a semi-arid climate like the Treasure Valley, summer soil moisture evaporates fast. One of the most effective things you can do to slow that down and protect your trees through June, July, and August costs very little and takes an hour to apply correctly: mulch.

A 3 to 4 inch layer of organic wood chip mulch spread out to the drip line of a tree does several things at once. It slows surface moisture evaporation significantly, which is the main benefit in Idaho's dry summer climate. It also moderates soil temperature, keeping the root zone cooler during peak afternoon heat. And as it breaks down over a season, it improves soil structure and microbial activity — both of which support long-term root health in soils that tend toward compaction in dry conditions.

Two things to do it right: keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk (direct contact with bark traps moisture and invites rot and pest problems), and use wood chip mulch rather than rock or rubber. Rock and rubber mulches don't break down and don't offer any soil improvement — they just hold heat, which is exactly the opposite of what your trees need in a Treasure Valley summer.

If you're not sure whether your trees are mulched correctly or at all, this is a good weekend to take a look. ArborSafe is available for tree health consultations across Nampa, Caldwell, Meridian, Eagle, and Boise. Visit arborsafetreeservice.com or call (208) 465-9479. Do your trees currently have a mulch ring around them, or is the soil at the base mostly bare?
