Spotted Lanternfly Egg Masses and Tree of Heaven on Berks County Properties This Fall

Post Copy

Spotted lanternfly adults are laying eggs right now, and Berks County trees, fences, and outdoor equipment are where those gray, mud-like smears show up.

Each egg mass holds 30 to 50 eggs that hatch next spring. They are easy to miss on bark, stone walls, firewood, and trailers, which is how the pest keeps spreading from Reading into Chester, Montgomery, and Lehigh Counties.

The insect's favorite host is tree of heaven, an invasive species that sprouts along fence lines, alleys, and vacant lots. Cutting it down alone often backfires, since the roots push up dozens of new shoots, so the stump and sprouts need attention too.

Scraping egg masses into rubbing alcohol through the winter helps, and so does taking stock of any tree of heaven on your property. Arbor Max handles tree of heaven removal and stump grinding across the region.
