Trees still holding storm damage or weak limbs from summer will not get any safer once the leaves start falling.
Early fall is a good window for storm-prep pruning: the canopy is still full enough to spot problem branches clearly, but the worst of summer storm activity has usually passed.
Removing deadwood and reducing weight on long, overextended limbs now lowers the odds of damage from wind or an early ice event later in the year, and it beats paying for emergency response after a limb comes down.
