Gypsy Moth Pressure Is Increasing Across Connecticut — Here's What to Watch For This June

Post Copy

June is a critical month for spotting spongy moth (formerly gypsy moth) damage across Connecticut. Caterpillar feeding typically peaks in late May through June, and trees that are heavily defoliated right now are under significant stress, especially oaks and other hardwoods that are common throughout Fairfield and New Haven counties.

One season of defoliation doesn't usually kill a healthy tree, but repeated defoliation over two or three years can weaken even mature specimens to the point of serious decline. Trees that are already stressed from drought, construction damage, or disease are more vulnerable. If you've noticed bare branches or heavy caterpillar activity on your oaks, maples, or birches, it's worth paying attention.

ArborGreen Tree Service can assess the health of impacted trees and discuss options: monitoring, targeted treatment for future seasons, or removal if a tree has already declined beyond recovery. Getting an accurate picture now helps you make the right call for your property.

Image / Media Suggestion

A photo of defoliated oak canopy showing the contrast between bare and leafed-out sections, or a before/after of an impacted tree assessed and managed, makes the seasonal issue visible and immediate. Authentic Connecticut property photos are strongly preferred over stock. If spongy moth damage photos from client jobs are available, those are ideal.
