Cottonwood Seed Season in Northern Colorado: What It Means for Your Trees

Post Copy

If you've noticed the familiar white fluff drifting across Fort Collins, Windsor, and Greeley right now, cottonwood seed season is here. It's more than a nuisance. This time of year is also when cottonwoods are putting significant energy into seed production, which can make structural issues in the tree easier to spot as the canopy fills in and weight distribution becomes more visible.

Cottonwoods are fast-growing and can develop large, heavy limbs that create real hazards if not properly managed. Branches over a roofline, fence, or utility line deserve a close look this month. If you've noticed new leaning, cracks at major branch unions, or sections of the canopy that didn't leaf out fully this spring, those are signs worth a professional assessment.

ArborCo Tree Care works with cottonwoods and other Northern Colorado natives year-round. Whether it's selective pruning to reduce weight and wind load, full removal of a tree that's past its useful life, or a simple inspection to tell you what you're actually dealing with, we're happy to take a look.

Image / Media Suggestion

A photo of a large cottonwood on a Northern Colorado residential property works well here, ideally showing scale relative to the house. An in-progress pruning shot or a before/after of a cottonwood limb removed from over a roofline would be ideal. Authentic local job photos outperform stock images significantly.
