How to Spot Ips Beetle Damage in Slash and Loblolly Pines Around Live Oak

Post Copy

A pine that browns from the top down in a matter of weeks is often telling you something serious: bark beetles may already be inside.

Ips engraver beetles are common in North Florida pines, especially slash and loblolly pines stressed by drought, lightning strikes, root damage, or nearby construction. Look for small reddish pitch tubes on the bark, fine sawdust in bark crevices or at the base, and needles fading from green to yellow to rusty brown.

Once a pine is heavily infested, it usually cannot be saved, and beetles can move into neighboring stressed trees. Removing an infested pine promptly helps protect the rest of the stand and prevents a dead tree from becoming a hazard over a home, barn, or driveway.

Altman Tree has been removing and assessing pines around Live Oak and Suwannee County since 2014, with the equipment to take down tall pines safely in tight spots.
