Why an ISA Certified Arborist Won't Top Your Birmingham Tree, and What Works Better

Post Copy

It's one of the most common requests we get: "Can you just cut the top out so it's not so tall?" It makes sense on the surface, since a shorter tree seems like a safer tree. But topping usually does the opposite, and an ISA Certified Arborist won't recommend it.

When a tree is topped, large limbs are cut back to stubs with no regard for where the tree can actually seal the wound. The tree responds by pushing out a flush of fast, weakly attached sprouts right at those cuts, while decay works its way into the stubs. Within a few years, the tree is often just as tall, much denser, and far more likely to drop limbs in a storm.

There are better ways to get the result you're after. Crown reduction shortens limbs back to healthy side branches that can take over, thinning lets wind pass through, and raising the canopy clears roofs and driveways. If a tree truly is too big for its spot, a planned removal and a better-suited replacement is often the honest answer, and around Birmingham, Homewood, and Vestavia we'd rather tell you that than leave a topped tree behind.

Have you seen topped trees around your neighborhood, and did you ever wonder why they grow back looking the way they do?

Image / Media Suggestion

Real photo of a properly reduced or thinned canopy from an ACE pruning job, ideally a before/after. A side-by-side graphic contrasting a topped tree with a properly pruned one also works if no job photo fits. Authentic photos from real ACE jobs strongly preferred over stock images.
