Cabling and Bracing Can Keep a Split-Trunk Birmingham Oak Standing Instead of Coming Down

Post Copy

A split or double-trunk tree doesn't always have to come down. Cabling and bracing can add support to mature Birmingham oaks and maples with two main trunks growing from a single weak point.

High in the canopy, flexible steel cable is installed between the main leads to limit how far they can spread apart in wind. Where a crack or weak union sits lower on the trunk, threaded steel rods may be installed to brace it. The system is support rather than a cure, and it works best on trees that are otherwise healthy.

ACE Tree Service has an ISA Certified Arborist on staff to decide whether a tree is a good candidate, looking at the union, the wood around it, the root zone, and what sits under the canopy. Some trees in Homewood, Vestavia, and Hoover are ideal for cabling, while others are safer as a planned removal.

Image / Media Suggestion

Real photo of a cabling installation high in a mature oak or maple, or a crew member working in the canopy on a co-dominant tree. A close-up of the V-shaped union between two trunks also works. Authentic photos from real ACE jobs strongly preferred over stock images.
