A lightning protection system gives a strike a planned path from the top of a Birmingham oak to the ground, keeping that energy out of the wood itself.
Each system has three main parts: an air terminal fastened high in the main leader, a copper conductor cable running down the trunk with fasteners that allow the tree to keep growing, and ground rods set in the soil away from the root flare. Larger trees get branch conductors on major limbs. Systems follow industry standards for tree lightning protection and are rechecked at regular intervals as the tree grows.
Lightning protection is best suited to tall, isolated, high-value trees near homes, historic trees, and trees already struck once. ACE Tree Service installs these systems across Central Alabama, with an ISA Certified Arborist evaluating each tree first.
