As Birmingham canopies start to thin in October, dead limbs that hid behind summer leaves become easy to spot.
Look for bare gray branches with no leaves, bark peeling in strips, and limbs that dropped their leaves weeks before the rest of the tree. Broken branches still hung up in the canopy after summer thunderstorms are another common find. Areas over roofs, driveways, play areas, and fence lines deserve the closest look.
Dead wood gets more brittle through winter, and Alabama's cold-season storms and occasional ice add weight. Removing it lowers risk and takes away an entry point for decay. ACE Tree Service has an ISA Certified Arborist on staff who can tell a dead limb from one simply dropping leaves early.
