Silky white webbing wrapped around the ends of branches is becoming a common sight on pecan, hickory, and sweetgum trees around Birmingham this time of year. That webbing is the work of fall webworm caterpillars building their nests before the season turns.
Fall webworm rarely kills an established, healthy tree, but heavy infestations can strip enough leaves to stress a tree that is already dealing with late-summer drought. Younger or already-struggling trees feel the impact more than mature, well-established ones.
Pruning out small nests while they are still contained is often enough. Larger infestations may call for a broader integrated pest management plan, especially on a property with several affected trees.
