Tree Planting Guidance for Birmingham's Clay Soil and Summer Heat

Post Copy

The tree that thrives in a magazine photo isn't always the tree that will thrive in Birmingham clay soil.

Central Alabama's dense, slow-draining soil and summer heat favor regionally adapted species like Southern magnolia, willow oak, and American holly over many imported ornamentals. Planting depth matters as much as species choice. A tree planted too deep in clay soil can develop girdling roots that shorten its lifespan significantly.

Getting species selection and planting depth right from the start prevents years of struggle with a tree that never fully establishes.
