June in Central Alabama often starts dry, and trees that looked fine through spring can begin showing stress surprisingly fast once the heat sets in and rainfall gets inconsistent. Drought stress doesn't always announce itself with wilting. On established trees, the signs are more subtle, and they're easy to miss until a tree is already in serious trouble.
On oaks, look for early leaf curl, browning along leaf edges, and premature leaf drop. Pines under drought stress may show needles browning from the tips inward, and they become more vulnerable to beetle activity when they can't produce enough resin to defend themselves. Dogwoods are among the most drought-sensitive trees in Central Alabama, and their leaves will scorch and drop early when soil moisture gets too low for too long.
The challenge is that not every sign of summer stress means the tree is dying, but some do signal a deeper problem that needs professional evaluation. A certified arborist can assess root zone moisture, look for secondary issues that drought is masking, and recommend whether treatment, structural support, or just proper watering will address the situation.
At ACE Tree Service, we evaluate trees for drought stress as part of our standard health assessments. Adam Elliott, ISA Certified Arborist, has spent years reading Central Alabama trees through summer conditions. If a tree in your yard has started looking different over the past few weeks, it's worth a closer look now rather than later.
