Post-Storm Tree Assessment in Birmingham: How ACE Evaluates Damage and Identifies Hidden Risks After Severe Weather

Post Copy

After a severe storm, the visible damage is obvious. A downed limb in the yard, a split trunk, bark stripped from a major scaffold branch. But the visible damage is often the least dangerous part. It's the hidden consequences that matter most: root heave that's shifted the tree's anchor underground, cracks in the trunk concealed behind intact bark, or broken upper branches still hanging in the canopy that haven't come down yet.

A proper post-storm assessment looks for all of it. Root heave around the base of a tree indicates that the root plate may have partially failed, meaning the tree is no longer secure even if it looks upright. Interior cracks often don't show from the ground. And hanging branches (what arborists call "widow makers") can remain suspended in the canopy for weeks before falling. These aren't visible on a quick walkthrough, and they're the risks that lead to injuries and property damage well after the storm has passed.

ACE conducts systematic post-storm evaluations across Central Alabama: checking ground disturbance at the root zone, assessing trunk integrity, clearing the upper canopy, and identifying anything that represents an active hazard. If a tree is threatening a structure or creating an immediate danger, ACE's 24/7 emergency response covers Birmingham and the surrounding area.

If there's been recent severe weather in your area and you haven't done a full property walkthrough yet, that's worth prioritizing. Learn more at acetreebham.com. After the last bad storm in your area, did you do a full walkthrough of your trees? Did anything surprise you?
