Yellow Needles Dropping From North Atlanta Pines in October Are Usually Normal Seasonal Shedding

Post Copy

If the inside of your loblolly pine has turned yellow and the driveway is covered in needles, take a breath before you assume the tree is dying. Every fall, pines across Gwinnett and North Fulton shed their oldest needles, usually the ones that are two or three years old, while the newest needles at the branch tips stay green.

That pattern is the key. Normal seasonal drop starts on the inside of the canopy and works outward, and the tree still looks full and green at the tips. What's not normal is browning that starts at the tips, whole sections of the crown turning reddish brown at once, or small pitch tubes and sawdust on the trunk, which can point to bark beetles in a stressed tree.

We get calls every October from homeowners who were told their pine needed to come down. Sometimes it does, but often it's just shedding, and you'd be paying for a removal you don't need. One of our certified arborists can tell the difference in a quick walk-through, so you only spend money where it actually matters.

Is your pine dropping needles right now, and are the tips still green? #PineTrees #NorthAtlanta
