October Through Early Spring Is the Best Window to Plant New Trees in North Atlanta Yards

Post Copy

If you've been meaning to replace a tree you lost or add shade to a bare yard, the next few months are the best time of year to plant in North Metro Atlanta. Cooler air takes the stress off young trees, while Georgia soil stays warm enough for roots to keep growing well into winter.

A tree planted in fall spends months building roots before it has to support a full canopy in the summer heat. Trees planted in May or June have to do both at once, which is why so many spring plantings struggle through their first July. Fall planting also means less watering, since cooler temperatures and seasonal rain do much of the work.

A few tips from our certified arborists: pick a species that fits the space at its mature size, keep new trees well away from the house and power lines, and plant so the root flare sits at or slightly above grade. Planting too deep is one of the most common mistakes we see in newer North Atlanta neighborhoods.

If you could plant one new tree in your yard this fall, what would it be and where would it go?
