By late August, months of heat and dry air have already left many Los Angeles trees weaker than they look.
When Santa Ana winds pick up, it's usually the already-stressed trees, drought-thinned canopies, root damage, or old storm wounds, that fail first. Eucalyptus and fast-growing ornamentals are especially prone to dropping limbs or toppling outright once wind speeds climb.
A quick canopy check before wind events can catch warning signs like dead wood, cracked unions, or a lean that's gotten worse over the summer. It's a lot easier to address a hazard on a calm day than after a windstorm has already made the decision for you.
If a tree on your property has looked off since the heat set in, it's worth a second look now.
