Sudden Oak Death (SOD), caused by the water mold Phytophthora ramorum, has been confirmed throughout coastal Northern California, and Humboldt County's wet, foggy climate creates near-ideal conditions for its spread during the rainy season. As spring growth fills out and the wet season winds down, now is the right time to take a close look at the oaks and tanoaks on your property.
Early signs of infection include bleeding cankers or dark staining on the trunk, wilting in the upper canopy, and dieback where dead leaves stay attached to the branch rather than dropping. By the time these symptoms are visible on the outside, the disease is already well established. An assessment from a certified arborist is the most reliable way to know what you're actually dealing with.

Authentic job photo preferred: a crew member inspecting the trunk or canopy of a large oak or tanoak, or a before/after showing a compromised tree that was assessed and removed. A close-up of a crew member examining bark for early disease signs would work especially well for this post's educational angle. Real job photos from Humboldt County locations will outperform any stock imagery here.
